The Parkway Concert Orchestra begins its 2010-11 season “From Sea To Shining Sea,” featuring music heard in America, with a fall concert on Sunday, November 7 at 3 p.m. at the Holy Name Church, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury.

Music Director and Conductor Matthew Fritz conducts the 50-piece orchestra in a family concert of music from cartoons, TV, and the movies, including Rossini’s 'Barber of Seville Overture,' Tchaikovsky’s 'Sleeping Beauty Waltz,' and 'Highlights from Harry Potter.' The concert will feature mezzo-soprano Krista River singing selections from 'Barber of Seville' and 'Carmen'. The audience will have a chance to meet and learn about the orchestra instruments at an instrument petting zoo.

The Program:

Krista River, mezzo-soprano

Praised by The New York Times for possessing a “shimmering voice…with the virtuosity of a violinist and the expressivity of an actress,” mezzo-soprano Krista River is a winner of the 2004 Concert Artists Guild International Competition and is also a 2007 grant recipient from the Sullivan Foundation. Upcoming engagements include Handel’s Messiah with the Charlotte Symphony, Ellen Zwillich Taaffe’s Passages with Boston Musica Viva, a chamber music performance with Serenata of Santa Fe, featuring Shulamit Ran’s Amichai Songs, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Back Bay Chorale. Performances at Emmanuel Music include Beethoven’s Four Ariettas and Duet, op. 82, and a solo Bach cantata, Widerstehe doch der Sünde, BWV 54. An avid recitalist, Ms. River will perform solo recitals with pianist Stephen Porter at venues such as the Nantucket Atheneum, Phillips Academy in Andover, and the Frederick Historic Piano Collection in Ashburnham, MA. In May, she will give the NYC premiere of Tom Cipullo’s Insomnia at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall with the Mirror Visions Ensemble.

Krista River began her musical career as a cellist, earning her music degree at St. Olaf College. She resides in Boston and is a regular soloist with Emmanuel Music’s renowned Bach Cantata Series.
