Muriel Porter

Muriel PorterMuriel Porter joined the orchestra in her Freshman year at Boston State Teacher’s College and has played first flute for the past 49 orchestra seasons. Muriel met her husband Bill in the orchestra and, since 1967, the Porters have done the behind–the–scenes work of running the orchestra. Muriel has worked with community groups to present concerts for local audiences in West Roxbury, Dedham, Westwood and Walpole. She is a member of the National Flute Association and the Greater Boston Flute Association.

Muriel is a former elementary school teacher in Dedham and taught flute to pupils during the 70’s and 80’s while raising two daughters. It is Muriel’s hope that the children of present orchestra members who are playing side–by–side with adult mentors may have the same chance to enjoy a rich cultural life while playing and rehearsing semi–classical music in the style of the Boston Pops with the Parkway Concert Orchestra well into this new millennium year under competent, patient conductors who make concerts fun for both the orchestra and the audience.

As the grandmother of three boys and one girl, Muriel hopes grandsons Andy, who played trumpet at King Phillip Regional Jr. High School, and Sean who studied trombone at Walpole Jr. High School will be able to enjoy music throughout their lifetime as their grandparents have done.

“We feel it has been a way of giving of ourselves using music, a media we value, while enriching our own souls as well.”
