Parkway Concert Orchestra in Norwood on May 7

The Parkway Concert Orchestra will present Spanish Gypsies on Sunday, May 7, at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 100 Winter Street, Norwood. Geneviève Leclair conducts the 50 piece non-profit orchestra in Bolero, Chabrier's España, and music from 'Lord of the Dance.' The concert will feature violinist Emil Altschuler in Zigeunerweisen, by Pablo de Sarasate.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Norwood Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. Donation is $15; $10 for seniors and students; and free for children under 12 years old. Light refreshments and free parking are included. Guest Artist Emil Altschuler, violin

Emil Altschuler portraitEmil Altschuler, violinist, praised by The Strad “Passion and portamento from a young American violinist”, and The Whole Note writes “There’s a decidedly old-style feel to...very reminiscent of Heifetz.” He received his Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School under Dorothy DeLay and Naoko Tanaka and his Master of Music from The Yale School of Music under Erick Friedman. He has performed in Lincoln Center, San Francisco’s Helen Von Ammon’s Emerging Artist Series, The Aspen Music Festival, and Italy’s Castello di Galeazza. He also performs in recitals with pianist Thomas Pandolfi reviving the old-style virtuoso program including concerti, showpieces, transcriptions and sonatas. He has served as Head of Strings for NEC’s Festival Youth Orchestra and as chamber music coach at the School of Continuing Ed. and Prep. School. He is also Community Music instructor at Tufts University, collaborates on the Tufts Composers and Faculty concerts and serves as violin coach for the Tufts Youth Philharmonic. Emil’s latest recording with pianist Keunyoung Sun includes music by Falla, Ravel, Albeniz, Poulenc, Bartok and was featured on NPR, HJCK in Bogotá, Colombia and broadcast on MDR KLASSIK in Halle, Germany.
